Malaysia Seeks Tariff Exemptions from U.S. on Key Exports Amid Rising Trade Pressures

Malaysia has formally requested the United States to eliminate tariffs on a range of its key exports, including furniture, automotive components, and aerospace parts. The appeal comes in response to Washington's recent tariff hikes—such as a 50% duty on kitchen cabinets and 30% on upholstered furniture—that are straining bilateral trade.
According to officials, the U.S. is also reviewing possible exemptions for items that Malaysia does not produce domestically, such as cocoa and palm oil. A final decision is expected in the coming weeks.
The request marks Malaysia's latest effort to protect its manufacturing sectors and maintain access to U.S. markets, as global trade tensions escalate under President Trump's reciprocal tariff regime.
