• Trump signed a proclamation under Section 232 to impose new global tariffs: 10% on softwood lumber, and 25% on upholstered furniture and kitchen cabinets, with the latter rising to 30% and 50% on Jan 1 respectively.
• The measure allows exemptions or reduced tariffs for the UK, EU, and Japan—e.g. UK wood tariffs capped at 10%, EU/Japan at 15%.
• The administration says the U.S. now imports the majority of its lumber despite having capacity to meet 95% of demand internally—raising national security flags over dependency and vulnerability in supply chains.
